Description of the role

Infex Therapeutics is looking to appoint a scientist at the ‘Associate’ or ‘Microbiologist’ grade (depending on experience) to support our expanding portfolio of antibiotic-development programs. The position will be based in Alderley Park working with the Biology team and conducting research to progress our current programs targeting bacterial and viral pathogens. The ideal candidate will have an understanding of bacterial antibiotic resistance and be motivated to get involved in developing new antibacterial agents to overcome this global problem, and/or an understanding of viral infectious disease. As part of our team you will assess the biological profile of newly developed compounds, both in terms of in vitro potency and toxicity to mammalian cells, using whole-cell and biochemical techniques. You will be involved in routine laboratory maintenance such as compound management, media preparation and organisation of departmental databases. As such, the role is mostly lab-based and provides an excellent opportunity to get involved in the development of novel antimicrobials to treat critical infections.

  • Performing a wide range of routine screening assays (bacterial susceptibility testing, cytotoxicity profiling and cell culture, mode of action studies, enzyme/biochemical assays)
  • Develop and validate innovative in vitro biological assays
  • Maintain good lab organisation as well as careful and thorough bench work
  • Keep careful records of experimental work and report when required
  • Meet deadlines
  • Communication of data to stakeholders
  • Maintenance of data storage systems
  • Routine lab maintenance (preparation of reagents, compound management)
  • Adherence to local SHE regulations

  • BSc/MSc/PhD in an area of study pertinent to the role (Microbiology, Biology, Biological Sciences etc)
  • Experience in bacteriology, virology and/or mammalian cell culture
  • Understanding of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance desirable
  • Experience/interest in drug discovery desirable
  • Good interpersonal skills and team work

Projected start date: March 2021
